Unlike orthophosphates, polyphosphates will sequester cations in solution such as iron and manganese. By sequestering these and other problematic cations the treated water can remain clear and colorless reducing customer complaints. While these cations are not removed in the process, the polyphosphate is able to inturrupt the crystal or precipitate forming process of these cations which typically result in the red or black water complaints received. By interfering with the ability of these cations to form a precipitate, the resultant red or black water is not formed. As polyphosphates will revert to orthophospate, additonal corrosion protection is achieved through a dual action process. Polyphosphates have also been known to act as a cathodic inhibitor further stifling corrosion.
